Stem Cell Therapy
What Are Stem Cells — and How Do They Help Your Pet Heal?
Stem cells are like the body’s master repair team. They are special cells that have not yet decided what they want to be when they “grow up” — which means they can become many different types of cells depending on what the body needs.
How Stem Cells Work:
- Cell Renewal: Stem cells have the unique ability to divide and create new cells — a fresh start for damaged tissue.
- Unlimited Potential: They can transform into different types of cells — bone, cartilage, muscle, liver, and more — depending on what needs repairing.
Where Do These Stem Cells Come From?
There are two main sources:
- Embryonic Stem Cells: These are no longer commonly used due to ethical concerns.
- Adult Stem Cells: These are the ones we use in veterinary medicine. They can be found in many parts of the body like fat, bone marrow, blood, or liver.
In pets, adipose tissue (from young, healthy animals) is one of the easiest and most effective sources for harvesting these healing cells.
How Do Stem Cells Know Where to Go?
Think of it like an emergency rescue mission. When tissue is injured:
- The damaged area sends out “SOS signals” (chemical messengers like SDF-1, HGF, and hypoxia).
- These signals act like a GPS for stem cells, guiding them straight to the injured area.
- Once they arrive, stem cells get to work: they change into the kind of cell that’s needed (like cartilage for a joint injury) and help repair the damage.
